THOMAS TUCHEL has begged Chelsea fans not to make fun of the outstanding striker, Romelu Lukaku – while also vowing to protect the Belgian.
Lukaku hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the Blues’ 1-0 win over Crystal Palace to score the fewest touches ever in a Premier League game.
Besieged Belgium international, 28 years old, only managed SEVEN touches throughout the game to the bewilderment of Blues fans, who mused about his lack of effort on Twitter.
But the owner of Chelsea Tuchel are siding with Lukaku and want the club’s supporters to rally around the striker, who can obviously do with some sympathy from the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Speaking before the Blues face France’s Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday, Tuchel said: “Sometimes this happens with strikers if they struggle a little bit with confidence and find the space to come in. with a good defence.
“It can be like this, of course that’s not what we want and what Romelu wants but it’s also not the time to laugh about him and make jokes about him.
“He’s in the spotlight and we’ll protect him.”
Lukaku’s second spell with Chelsea has many problems, most notably publicly that he wants to return to Inter Milan.

The shy attacker in front of goal has also scored just 10 times since his £97.5m summer move from San Siro.
But Tuchel is not worried by Lukaku’s serious decline in form as many strikers, including former Blues players, fail. Fernando Torres and Andriy Shevchenko also struggled at the club.
After moving from Liverpool in 2011 with big money, Torres could not live with the hype and could only score 20 goals in 110 games. Premier League Game.
And Shevchenko – who joined the Blues in 2006 from AC Milan – also left his scoring shoe in Italy.
The Ukrainian icon has failed to make an impact for three seasons at Stamford Bridge – netting just nine times in 48 Prem games.
He added: “There’s a history of strikers struggling at Chelsea. It’s clearly not the easiest place to play. I’m not sure why that is.”
But Tuchel is hoping Lukaku’s goal is down The notable absence of full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell who provided a large number of assists for the Blues.
Speaking on the effect of the missing couple on Lukaku, Tuchel brooding: “Every form changes when the main players have long-term injuries, we play many games with three full-backs and full-backs. Two of the key full-backs are Reece and Chilly , who were traumatized at their peak.
“They’ve had a huge impact on our game offensively and defensively, as well as in regards to Romelu, with their speed and serves.
“Of course it changes and in the squad we play the full-back is the deciding factor that affects the game, but we can also play and win without any players.
“This is our job. When we have trauma and cases of Covid, I have to adapt to find solutions and Romelu will always be part of the solution.”
