The National Hurricane Center began issuing Tropical Outlooks as of today and there are currently no areas highlighted for development over the next 5 days.
Looking to the long-term outlook, Accuweather highlights an area in the western Caribbean where there is little likelihood of tropical development between May 20th and 25th. If we see something developing that is unlikely, potential storms would be even less likely to end up in Southeast Texas. Only one tropical cyclone has struck the Houston area in May since 1850.
Hurricane season begins on June 1st.
Expect an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year, with forecasts of 19 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.
Reasons for the above-average forecast include the absence of El Nino and warmer-than-normal subtropical Atlantic temperatures.
There is a 71% chance of at least one major hurricane hitting the entire continental US coast. The average over the last century was 52%.
Remarkably for the people here in Texas, there is a 46% chance of a major storm along the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle west to Brownsville.
Major hurricanes are Category 3, 4 or 5 storms and these wind speeds are over 180 km/h.
Although hurricane season isn’t here yet, the release of the forecast is a reminder to stay prepared, as it only takes one hurricane to make landfall to affect life.
The busiest season on record occurred in 2020, when 30 named storms, 14 hurricanes, and 7 major hurricanes occurred.
The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th. But in recent years, named storms in May and even as early as April have become common.
