Tribute to Harry Potter elf Dobby may be postponed after fans left socks and messages

National Trust is considering moving a memorial to Harry Potter Character Dobby amid concerns about the location’s infrastructure.

A ‘grave’ marks the spot where the character’s death was filmed, above the beach at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire.

Socks were also left as tribute, alongside makeshift tombstones marking the beloved elf’s “resting place”.

In the magical book and film series, elves are only granted freedom if they are given a piece of clothing. Dobby was freed Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when he was accidentally given a sock by his master Lucius Malfoy.

Now the National Trust, the organization that manages the visitor hotspot, has released a poll asking for opinions on the future of the site.

“In recent years we have seen an increase in visitors looking to experience all that Freshwater West has to offer, including its beautiful beach,” it said in a statement.

“We’re excited to welcome people to the site, but the increasing numbers mean the facilities and infrastructure are under even greater pressure. We want visitors to have a comfortable and safe experience while ensuring that this special landscape is cared for for future generations.”

One suggested option for the figure’s burial site is “to move the memorial to a suitable publicly accessible location.”

Some fans have concerns about the prospect of the memorial being moved or taken down.

“Noooo let it be it’s beautiful and it doesn’t hurt,” wrote one supporter on social media. “There’s no point in removing it, people will visit anyway, leave Dobby alone!”

“You can’t just move a memorial around when you feel like it!” protested another fan, to which a Twitter viewer replied: “You don’t know it’s not actually a tomb? Not true?”

Elsewhere, others called for the memorial to be left where it is, writing: “Leave it, there is no harm.”
