DUBAI (Reuters) – The United Arab Emirates’ top national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan will visit Iran on Monday to discuss expanding bilateral ties with the Islamic Republic , Iranian state media reported on Sunday.

There was no immediate comment from the UAE Foreign Ministry regarding the visit of Sheikh Tahnoon, who is the brother of the country’s de facto ruler Abu Dhabi, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed and chairman of state investor ADQ. .

“He will meet Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) secretary Ali Shamkhani and other Iranian officials in Tehran,” Iran’s Nournews, an organization affiliated with the SNSC, said.

In 2019, the UAE began to engage with Iran following attacks on oil tankers off the coast of the Gulf and on Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure. Sunni Muslim powerhouse Saudi Arabia began direct talks with Iran in April, with Riyadh describing the talks as “intimate” but mostly exploratory.

Anwar Gargash, foreign affairs adviser to the President of the UAE, said last month that his country was “taking steps to de-escalate tensions with Iran as part of a policy choice towards diplomacy and avoidance” confrontation”.

Sheikh Tahnoon’s visit comes days after indirect talks between Washington and Tehran on restoring the 2015 Iran nuclear deal broke down on Friday until the following week Western officials revealed frustrated by the far-reaching demands of the Islamic Republic.

A senior US official said on Saturday that Iran had come “with proposals to leave anything out – any compromise that Tehran had made during the previous six rounds of negotiations that began in April.” and postponed following the election of hardline president Ebrahim Raisi in June. .
