Dragon types are some of the strongest Pokémon of all time, but not all are as fierce as the others. We’ve compiled a list of the best Dragon-type Pokemon, from Dragonite to Rayquaza.
If you ask a trainer what type of Pokemon is the strongest, they will most likely say “dragon”. As the name suggests, these beasts have earned a reputation for being incredibly powerful, with strong stats and impressive moves.
It also helps that many Legendaries are Dragon-type, which only increases their popularity. There are a few duds in the pack, however, so it’s important to know which ones are worth catching and spending time and resources to level up.
We’ve taken each and every dragon type, considering a number of factors like stats, movement pool, how interesting their lore is, and the quality of their design, to create a list of the best dragon-type Pokemon of all time.
Dragonite has been the favorite Dragon-type Pokémon for many trainers since its debut in the early Kanto days. It can hit hard, has decent mass, and remains one of the most popular creatures in the series, so it’s easy to see why Dragonite has earned its pseudo-legendary status.
It might not be as intimidating as some of the newer Dragon-types, but it does well against most enemies (except Ice-types, watch out for the 4x damage) and the Multiscale hidden ability was a brilliant addition to the perks by Dragonite, halves the damage it takes when at full health.
The second pseudo-legend on our list is Dragapult, introduced in Sword & Shield. It might not look very imposing, but at 142 Speed it’s one of the fastest Pokemon ever made, which pretty much ensures it attacks first. Combine this with 120 Attack and 100 Special Attack and it’s a big Threat.
Being a Dragon/Ghost dual type, it offers great range and some unique resistances, while access to attacks like Draco Meteor and Hex means it can pack a punch. It won’t last long in combat, but as long as you’re prepared, Dragapult will hit hard – and fast.
If you can overlook its unnerving design, Sword & Shield’s bizarre, fossil-based Dracovish is actually one of the best dragon-type Pokemon the franchise has ever released — a bold statement when it only has 505 base stats, but listen up let’s get this straight, okay?
Dracovish’s main strength is the Fishious Rend move, one of the most broken moves in Pokémon history. It deals a massive 170 damage on the first attack, and that’s boosted by 50% with the Strong Jaw ability, which also works on moves like Crunch and Ice Fang.
Another pseudo-legend that makes our list is the brilliant Salamence, which has a solid 135 Attack and 110 Special Attack, and 100 Speed, meaning it can move faster than many of its Pokemon- Dragon type counterparts.
Upon Mega Evolution, Salamence becomes almost unstoppable as his stats increase to 145 Attack, 120 Special Attack, 130 Defense, and 120 Speed. It also gains the Aerilate ability, which converts normal attacks like Hyper Beam into flying attacks, dealing shocking STAB damage to them in the process.
In terms of design, Eternatus is quite possibly the most terrifying Pokemon we’ve seen – and that’s backed up by some pretty scary stats too. It has a total of 690 base stats, of which 140 are HP, another 145 are Special Attack, and 130 are Speed. That’s pretty impressive.
Being a unique Poison/Dragon type Pokemon also means it has no weakness to fairies, the infamous dragon slayers. One of the reasons Eternatus is so popular in Sword & Shield is its Dynamax Cannon attack, which deals double damage to Dynamaxed enemies – making it perfect for Max Raid Battles.
The next Legendary on our list is Kyurem, a member of the Unova region’s Tao Trio. While its normal form may be weaker than Zekrom and Reshiram, it outshines both, having the ability to merge with either to become one of two ultimate forms: White Kyurem or Black Kyurem.
Both forms are superior to their counterparts, each with 700 base stats broken down in different ways; Black Kyurem focuses on Physical Attack (170) while White Kyurem focuses on Special Attack (170). The ability to use it in a variety of ways makes it one of the best Dragon-type Pokemon.
Giratina is one of the most fearsome Pokemon of all time, with a backstory that has earned it iconic status in the fandom; It is the embodiment of antimatter, can travel through dimensions at will, and controls an alternate dimension known as the Distortion World. creepy stuff
It can switch between two forms, Origin Forme for attack and Altered Forme for defense, although Origin Forme Giratina is considered superior. It boasts brilliant stat distribution and powerful attacks, including its signature move, Shadow Force, which can wreak absolute havoc on the battlefield.
The pseudo-legendary Pokémon Garchomp has been a fan favorite for years, particularly due to its appearance in Diamond & Pearl, where many players considered it a must-have on a winning team. Unsurprisingly, it remains a top pick to this day, thanks largely to its brilliant Ground/Dragon typing.
Garchomp has access to some of the best moves in any game it appears in, allowing it to take on a variety of roles and gain cover against most enemies, while the awesome hidden ability Rough Skin deals damage whenever it makes contact with an enemy . It’s the most rounded dragon type you can get.
Dialga and Palkia both hold a special place in our hearts, but Dialga is the clear winner. The main reason is its steel/dragon typing, which means it negates the two major weaknesses that dragons typically have – fairies and other dragons. It’s up to a enormously Advantage in battles against other Dragon-type Pokémon.
It also has an immense Special Attack of 150, making its signature Roar of Time attack a real eye-catcher. All in all Dialga is an absolute powerhouse with one of the best designs in the game – it’s a giant armored dinosaur that can control time with the diamond in its chest, what’s not to like?
Not only is Rayquaza one of the best Legendaries of all time, but it’s also undoubtedly the best Dragon-type Pokémon. It has an iconic design, it was the first Pokemon to Mega Evolve, and it saved humanity from the formidable Groudon and Kyogre, proving it has the upper hand.
When it comes to combat, there really is no better choice of dragon type than Rayquaza. It has a devastating 150 Attack and 150 Special Attack, and the rest of its stats are pretty decent too, especially with a solid 105 HP to keep it alive longer on the battlefield.
These stats get even better when Mega-Evolved, with Attack and Special Attack stats both increasing to 180. Backing up those impressive numbers is access to brilliant moves like Earthquake, Outrage, and Hyper Beam that can easily dominate your opponents.
