Late Sound garden/Audio speakers singer Chris CornellToni Cornell’s 17-year-old daughter pays tribute to her father Tonight’s show on Thursday night (December 16) with a touching cover of the power ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U.”.
The song, appeared on the cover of the 2020 Cornell compilation after posting No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. first – also features the late rock icon with songs by Janis Joplin, Harry Nilsson, Guns N’ Roses, John Lennon and ELO, among others – originally written by Prince for the sub-group The Family and made famous by Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 Billboard Hot 100 smash edition #1.
Along with piano, acoustic guitar and string quartet, this girl sways slightly as she grips the mic stand with both hands and nailed a moving tribute to the loss, imbuing it with a little country influences. “It’s lonely without you here / Like a bird without a song,” Toni sang in a steady, powerful voice as the ropes taut behind her. “Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling / Tell me, baby, where did I go wrong / I can put my arms around every boy I see / But they just remind me about you”.
Back in 2018, Toni shared a cover of Dad’s “Nothing” to celebrate Father’s Day, writing, “Dad, I love you and miss you so much. You are the best dad anyone could have. You can ask. Our relationship is special, and you have always been there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love. You every day. With you recording this song is a special and wonderful experience, I wish I could repeat it 100 times and I know you too. Happy Father’s Day, nothing can compare. with dad”.
Cornell, 52, died in May 2017 after being found dead in his Detroit hotel room following a Soundgarden performance at the Fox Theater earlier that night.
