A group of investors led by Dodgers part owner Todd Boehly has agreed to buy Chelsea Football Club from sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
The new ownership group, which also includes investment firm Clearlake Capital, another Dodgers co-owner in Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, is buying the London-based Premier League team for £4.25 billion (US$5.25 billion). dollars), the club announced on Friday.
The deal is expected to close in late May “subject to all necessary regulatory approvals,” the team said in a statement.
Abramovich launched the club in early March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The consortium, led by Boehly — an investment banker who co-founded Connecticut-based holding company Eldridge Industries — beat out groups including one led by Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and co-chairman of Bain Capital, and one led by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Josh Harris and David Blitzer.
“Of the total investment made is £2.5 billion [about $3 billion] will be used to purchase the club’s shares and these proceeds will be deposited into a blocked UK bank account with the intention of donating 100% to charity, as confirmed by Roman Abramovich,” read Chelsea’s statement. “…In addition, the proposed new owners will provide £1.75bn [about $2.16 billion] in further investments in favor of the club.”
