TikToker video shows Siri not recognizing Palestine’s existence

Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, has had a hard time TikTok The user asked it for the time in Palestine.

Siri replied, “I don’t know what time it is.

TikToker Mayanoraa, posted a videotapes she questions Siri on her TikTok @mindfultraveller with over 40k followers.

In the video, she also asks Siri about the time in Israel, to which the voice assistant replies: ‘In Jerusalem, Israel, it’s 13:20 now’

In a follow-up video, responding to one of the comments asking her to ‘try asking a city on the west coast’, TikToker ran into the same problem.

Determined to expose Apple’s apparent prejudice against Palestinians, she asked Siri about her time in the Palestinian cities of Ramallah and Hebron.

Siri said, “Sorry, I don’t know what time it is in Ramallah. The same is true of Hebron.

Ramallah is currently the administrative capital of the Palestinian National Authority.

‘Hey Siri, what time is it in East Jerusalem?’ was also met with the same answer.

Mayanoraa told she noticed the problem when Read about Pegasus spyware and the veil for the Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah movement.

“I’m still wondering how the algorithm works and why Siri doesn’t recognize Palestine’s time zone when Android phones do,” she said.

Users were outraged in the comments calling for a boycott of Apple for siding with Israel, which is accused of violating human rights and illegally occupying Palestinian land.

‘I just tried this and got the same results. ” one TikTok user said in the comments.

‘Omg, this is horrible. I just tried it with my Siri and it can’t tell me the time or the weather in Palestine or East Jerusalem,’ another user said.

In May, Apple employees circulated an internal letter signed by nearly 1,000 employees, urging Tim Cook to issue a statement in support of the Palestinian people.

This comes after Israel’s deadly bombing campaign in Gaza that left some 227 people dead, including at least 63 children.

The writers, members of the Apple Islamic Association, specifically asked the company to recognize that ‘millions of Palestinians are currently suffering from illegal occupation’.

People in the comments tried it on their phones and found that Android’s Bixby, Amazon’s Alexa, and Huawei’s Celia were all able to answer questions about the time and weather in Palestine.

Google was able to respond but added it with links to East Jerusalem.

Similarly, Siri cannot tell the time in other territories like Kosovo or Abkhazia. The State of Palestine has been recognized by 138 of the 193 UN members and since 2012 has had the status of a non-member observer state of the United Nations.

This isn’t the first time Palestinian erasure has been featured on technology. Apple and Google have previously accused removed Palestine from their online map, even though it was never labeled in the first place.

Searching for Palestine on Apple Maps and Google Maps shows outlines for the Gaza Strip and West Bank territories, but no labels for Palestine.

‘It’s not fair and justice has nothing to do with nationality. It seems that peace is a privilege instead of a human right. In my opinion, “small” things like asking Siri if it’s not political right now,” said TikToker from Jordan, Iraq, and the Netherlands.
