TikTok users speak out as Creator Fund bug prevents Stars from paying

TikTok users who reached the Creator Fund access threshold were unable to access any form of payment due to a bug in the app’s registration system. The platform is working on a solution to the problem.

The TikTok Creator Fund was launched in mid-2020 as a proposed $2 billion fund to pay content creators in the app.

While that amount sounds startling, it’s still dwarfed the $15 billion that YouTube pays out to content creators annually. However, the three-year initiative is a start for monetization on the billion-user platform.

Still, making money from the work that went into making it and maintaining a popular TikT0k brand has been a goal for hundreds if not thousands of creators worldwide.

The TikTok Creator Fund started as a $200 million initiative before expanding to $2 billion over three years.

Those dreams were summarily stopped last month as a number of TikTokers were banned from registering for the fund despite having achieved all eligibility points.

Regarding the r/TikTokHelp subreddit, complaints have arisen because problems were found at the same point in the process: age verification.

“I get an error message that the page couldn’t be loaded and I should try again later. It allows me to enter my date of birth and email address, but when it comes to selecting my country and then uploading my ID, it doesn’t let me do anything at all.” said one user.

Stories from dozens of creators all head in the same direction — an inability to adequately register for the fund.

The ability to completely withdraw from the fund was understandably upset and discouraged by users.

Following requests for comment, TikTok creator Matt Mooney said Bloomberg: “When I finally hit 10,000 followers, I felt pretty accomplished. And then when I see this error, it’s a very devastating feeling. Now every time I post, all I can think of is how much I would have gotten in the Creator Fund.”

TikTok has announced that the company is “aware of an issue affecting the Creator Fund sign-up flow and is actively working on a fix that should be available in the next few days.”

Whether this means payment will be retroactive for creators remains to be seen. TikTok users speak out as Creator Fund bug prevents Stars from paying
