Three ‘badly decomposed bodies’ found in home after family ‘had not heard from residents in over a YEAR’

The decomposing bodies of three people, possibly adults, were found Wednesday in a California home. Authorities now believe it could have been a murder-suicide.

Police went to the home, which is in a gated community, around 10:30 a.m. to conduct a welfare check, the Irvine Police Department said.

“Extended family members of the home’s residents reported to Canadian authorities that they had not been able to reach the residents for over a year and were concerned,” the department said in a press release.

After being contacted, Canadian officials contacted Irvine PD.

According to the statement, a father, a mother and an adult son are said to have lived in the residence. Upon entering the home, officers found three “profusely decomposed” bodies that appeared to be adults.

There was no sign of forced entry into the home, investigators said, and no suspects were being investigated.

Officers said a gun was recovered from the home.

“There is some evidence that this was a domestic incident that resulted in a homicide-suicide,” the police statement said, but no further details were given.

Police said the bodies could have been in the home for up to 18 months. They are currently investigating how the case has gone unreported for so long.

“As I understand it, there is a homeowners association that is responsible for at least some of the front lawn care and maintenance,” Lt. Bill Bingham of the Irvine Police Department.

“Looking at the house at a glance, it’s not immediately apparent that someone hasn’t entered and exited the house for maybe up to a year.”
