THOMAS TUCHEL wrote himself into the Champions League history books, surpassing Zinedine Zidane with the reckless win in Lille.
The Chelsea manager saw his side beat back 2-1 from behind on the night in France.
Goals from Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta Both ends of the break ensured a safe passage into the quarters for the defending champions.
And these goals also confirmed Tuchel’s 32nd victory as a coach in the competition.
This makes the German, together with his compatriot Jupp Heynckes, the coach with the most wins in his first 50 games in the competition.
However, Heynckes secured 32 wins from a total of 47 competitive games – in 2013 in his third stint as coach of FC Bayern Munich.
Tuchel improved Zidane’s tally of 31 from his first 50.
The Frenchman took over as Real Madrid coach in January 2016.
Within five months he lifted Ol’ Big Ears after beating Atletico on penalties at the San Siro.
Just 24 months later Zidane won his third title in a row.

For comparison: Tuchel was in the final with Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, but lost to Bayern Munich.
He was sacked at the end of the year and then replaced Frank Lampard in the Chelsea Shelter in January 2021.
Like Zidane, he wasted no time in securing European glory Kai Havertz got a famous winner against Manchester City last season.
After the win in Lille, Tuchel said: “It’s so nice that so many fans are here to support the team, it feels great.
“The quarter-finals is a big step. We showed resilience and mentality to overcome difficulties.
“We did what was necessary. We dug in and deserved to win. It’s difficult here.”
“We hope and expect to continue. We want to keep up. It took a lot of sacrifices, we fought hard to get into the last eight. We’re looking forward to the draw.”
