Third Norwegian journalist detained in Qatar

November 30 – In the midst of preparations for the 2022 World Cup and increasing press coverage of hosts Qatar, a third Norwegian journalist was arrested in the country but later released without charge. .

Editor Josimar Håvard Mælnes has been held in solitary confinement for 24 hours, but his arrest further raises questions about how the World Cup suppresses press freedom.

On the eve of the FIFA Arab Cup, Mælnes flew to the Qatari capital to report on the human rights record that has long plagued the country. Earlier this year, The Guardian reported that at least 6,500 migrant workers have died in World Cup-related construction since Qatar was awarded the bid in 2010, higher than the United States and Australia among them. the others.

Mælnes told Norwegian media: “I was on my way out of the hotel when I saw an adult man berating two young hotel employees who were carrying his suitcase. “I asked him to take it easy. It ends with a light slap in the mouth.”

“Suddenly the man called the police and half a minute later I was sitting in the police car, handcuffed.”

Editor Josimar was held in solitary confinement for 24 hours but said the police treated him well. His arrest was not a surprise. His journal has been an outspoken critic of Qatar.

Earlier this month, NRK journalists Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani were also arrested in Qatar after they filmed a migrant labor camp. Local authorities accused the Norwegians of “invading private property and filming without a permit”.

The arrest led to a diplomatic incident. Qatar’s ambassador to Norway has been summoned to Oslo’s foreign ministry on the matter, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere called the arrest “unacceptable”.

In the World Press Freedom list for 2021, Qatar is 128th.
