Joe Biden is not delivering on his promise bring back normality into the presidency for one simple reason – he’s not normal.
Biden’s long pedigree, conventional politics and contrast with Donald Trump suggested that he would bring predictability and calm to the highest circles of national politics.
The press announced this imminent postponement. A headline in the Financial Times proclaimed, “Biden signals return to normality on day one as president.” CNN political analyst Chris Cillizza opined, “The most radical thing Biden has done in his first 48 hours as president is to behave completely normally.”
Yes, well, something funny has happened on the road to a return to normal – President Biden has embarked on bizarre escapade after bizarre escapade as he shattered his presidency on the rocks of incompetence, tone deafness and… persistently misplaced priorities.
It is not normal for a President to say things that are blatantly at odds with his own administration’s position, but recently Joe Biden said that Vladimir Putin commits genocide in Ukraine.
That statement went as well as his declaration that Putin must be removed from power, or the distinction he made between a Russian invasion and a Russian invasion “minor interference”. A press conference before the war.
The President, his aides said of his recent aberration, “spoke from his heart” (Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland) and “is free to voice his views on any point” (White House Press). Secretary Jen Psaki).
This has resulted in government officials patting the president on the head and telling people not to take what he says too seriously.
(Biden sets in the unfortunate tradition created by Donald Trump to issue willingly ignored presidential pronouncements.)
It’s not normal for a president to be such a lukewarm performer that it’s very difficult for him to dominate a stage.
That’s not normal for a president so routinely mispronounce that it almost seems strange when he gets it right.
It’s not normal for a president to shovel trillions of dollars into a growing economy and still want to spend trillions more when it’s clear that inflation is a real problem.
It’s not normal for a president to want to oppress the United States oil and gas production At the same time, he is asking OPEC to pump more.
It’s not normal for a president to open the floodgates for illegal migration on the southern border and pretend he doesn’t call the worrying deluge a “crisis” when somehow it isn’t.
It’s not normal for a president to give up his long-standing support for the Senate filibuster to try to pass a no-hope democratic electoral law, and warn of a looming autocracy if the legislation is not passed.
It’s not normal – nor should it be – for a president to renew a moratorium on evictions which he knows is illegal.
It’s not normal for a president to abandon Americans in a foreign country after his withdrawal of US forces, against the advice of his generals, causes an enemy force to quickly seize power.
It’s not normal for a first-term president to be on the verge of becoming a lame duck because almost no one believes his assurances that he will run again (only 41% of Democrats say so in a recent Wall Street Journal poll indicating that they believe Biden will run in 2024).
It is a deeply divided country at a time of growing foreign threats and declining trust in US institutions. These are serious challenges that will require skillful, far-sighted leadership from the President to address. Instead, even superior presidential leadership is not required, and that is not about to change.
Indeed, for Joe Biden, this rocking, uninspired appearance is the norm.
