New York Yankees pitching pro Luis Gil will have surgery, according to Tommy John a report.
The 23-year-old had a “significant injury” to his elbow, Aaron Boone previously told reporters. On Wednesday Gil left the mound while playing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and pointed to his throwing arm after throwing a throw in the fifth inning.
Gil is listed as the Yankees’ top 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The right-handed pitcher made his MLB debut last season and started his career with over 15 scoreless innings.
That year, however, Gil gave up four runs against the White Sox in his first start of the 2022 season.
Gil’s loss adds another punch to the Yankees’ pitching list. Triple-A pitcher Ron Marinaccio was called up after Chad Green expressed forearm discomfort against the Orioles on Thursday.
