Let’s start with the big news of the day: New York City Mayor Eric Adams is expected to announce today a change to the city’s private-sector immunization mandate that would allow unvaccinated home-team professional athletes, effective immediately in the five play districts.

That means Nets star Kyrie Irving would be eligible to play against the Hornets at the Barclays Center starting Sunday and in each postseason game six more games (five at home, one at Madison Square Garden), excluding a trip to Toronto. And it’s a grace period, arriving two weeks before Opening Day, for all members of the Yankees and Mets who could be subject to the ban. Mike Vaccaro assesses the policy change and questions “the separate standards for celebrities and civilians”.

The final qualifying window for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is wide open and it would be disastrous for the USA men’s national team to strike again. The World Cup qualifiers for USA-Mexico
