The Tigers beat Miguel Cabrera a shot 3,000 away

DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera made history in the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Tigers on Wednesday night, coming just wide.

Cabrera needed four hits to reach 3,000 and had singled three times when he came up to lead from the bottom of eighth against Clay Holmes. The announced crowd of 17,268 at Comerica Park stood and cheered as Cabrera went to the plate, but Holmes punched him.
“It was a pretty interesting feeling in the stadium,” said Aaron Boone, a teammate for Cabrera with the Marlins in 2007. “The roar in front of it, then the silence in every seat. It was pretty cool. I’m glad he didn’t end up here, but he’s knocking on the door.”
