The ‘Thrive’ program helps people find jobs and boost their credit scores

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A background check can put some people back into new jobs, and it’s not the background check you might think it is.

CNA Briana Williams appreciates her work for the struggle she went through to achieve it.

“I love it,” Williams said. “It’s amazing. I love my job. I absolutely love my job.”

It was a CNA position that she didn’t think was possible 4 years ago.

“I was in a shelter,” Williams recalls. “I don’t know what my next step will be, and I have three children depending on me.”

One thing holding Williams back is her credit score.

Williams recalls: “When you start applying, you feel like, ‘Well, you know, you’re not a good fit for us because of your credit score.

Williams found out United Way’s THRIVE program, which improved her credit score. ONE study shows that nearly 30% of employers check for credit when hiring candidates.

“In fact, an even higher percentage of employers consider credit scores as part of the background check process,” explains United Way of Greater Houston president Amanda McMillan.

Here are some ways to improve your score:

  • Set payment reminders.
  • Make multiple monthly credit card payments.
  • Do not apply for multiple credit cards at once.
  • Pay up to the credit card in advance.

Also, if you don’t have credit, look for ways to get some.

“You might be doing a great job meeting your financial obligations month after month, but if the credit bureaus don’t see that then you just don’t have the record,” says McMillan. “So finding products and services you can use to really show up.”

It may take some time to see improvements, but Williams knows it’s worth it. Now, with a better credit score, she has her dream job that changed her family’s life.

“I’m renting now, so my kids have their own space,” Williams said. “That’s great. Not cramped in a small place.”
