The three-time cancer survivor from Cary is opening businesses to give back to the cancer community

CARY, NC (WNCN) — Fighting cancer is a battle unto itself.

But navigating the treatments and accompanying necessary medical supplies that cancer patients need can be a whole different struggle.

A local cancer survivor is hoping to help.

At first glance, Jackie Cromity’s store on Kiesler Drive in Cary looks like a women’s boutique. It is filled with jewelry, handbags and scarves.

But it’s not what it seems.

“This is not a beauty salon. This is a medical facility and we work with oncologists and doctors,” Cromity said.

Cromity is a triple breast cancer survivor.

She founded Survivor Friendly after realizing there was no place nearby to go to get what she needed during and after treatment.

“I had to get prosthetics,” she said. “When I got them a few months later, I realized I could have gotten ones that matched the color of my skin. There is a lack of product variety, availability in the immediate vicinity of people and an understanding of what is needed.”

She wanted to change that.

She opened Survivor Friendly locations in Cary, Durham, Raleigh, Winston-Salem and several other locations across the state. Just to help women get what they need while fighting for their lives.

“I couldn’t let them fall through the cracks,” Cromity said.

In their shops, women can have individual prostheses and special mastectomy bras fitted. They can also choose wigs that suit their style and even choose temporary eyebrow tattoos to make them feel more like themselves during chemotherapy.

Staff at each Survivor Friendly location have been trained and certified to fit medical devices.
The team also works with and bills insurance companies directly to help patients focus on recovery.

Cromity wants to stand up for these women.

“Not just to educate them about what’s available to them, but also to educate insurance companies and the healthcare system,” she said.

She added that seeing women come in and get the help they need fuels their mission. Cromity hopes this is just the beginning.

“It allowed me to survive three episodes of very aggressive cancer,” she said. “That’s why I’m the voice for these other women.”

Survivor Friendly has locations in Cary, Durham, Raleigh, Winston-Salem and more.
