The thief, his wife and the canoe: Anne Darwin ‘will be happy when the ITV drama is over’

Anne Darwin, the woman at the center of new ITV drama The thief, his wife and the canoe, reportedly “can’t understand the fuss” surrounding the story.

The convicted fraudster served more than six years in prison for helping her husband John fake his own death in 2002.

The Darwins were caught after John showed up at a police station in 2007 claiming he had amnesia. As the story broke in the papers, a Cheshire housewife found online a photo of the couple posing at a real estate agency in Panama in 2006 (the year before he resurfaced).

Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan play John and Anne Darwin in the ITV series that dramatizes these events. The drama shows how Anne lied to her own sons, made them believe their father had died and tried to collect his life insurance money.

In Tuesday’s episode This morning on ITV (19 April), David Leigh – a journalist who covered the story at the time and co-wrote the book From my depth with Anne about her life – said Anne “obviously doesn’t enjoy it very much”.

Leigh, who speaks to Anne regularly, said, “She often says to me, ‘I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about, why after all this time there’s still this interest.’

“She lives a very quiet, anonymous existence. She obviously wishes that didn’t happen, but accepts that she played a part in it and to some extent understands the fascination of the British public.”

He said the story “has been going on for 15 years now and it’s moving on,” adding, “I think she’ll be happy when it’s over and she can just get on with her life and spend time with the boys.”

Leigh said he had “a lot of sympathy” for Anne and said he believed she was “forced” by John to follow his plan.
