Whoopie Goldberg wasn’t the original choice for the lead role in the 1992 comedy sister act. But over time, the actress and comedian’s role as Deloris Van Cartier has remained one of her most beloved. Goldberg took over the project thereafter Bette Midler declined. And it became one of the biggest hits of her career. Still, Goldberg was reluctant to commit to anything new sister act in the past few years. That’s why she couldn’t imagine doing another film.

Goldberg was arguably at the top of her game when she played the lead sister act. She recently won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Spirit. And Goldberg has been headlining major Hollywood films to great acclaim for a number of years. At this point, she seemed primed for a blockbuster smash.

The sequel from 1993, Sister Act 2: Back into the habit wasn’t nearly as big a hit. But over the years, it’s also built a solid following thanks to a groundbreaking performance by Lauryn Hill.

Decades later, the actor was reluctant to sign on for a sequel
After the second film failed to live up to expectations, the sister act Franchise came to an end. But with the introduction of Sister Act: The Musical In 2006, rumors circulated about a third film. Though she eventually recovered, Goldberg admits that she had long been reluctant to reprise her role because many of her co-stars have since died.
“Basically, I say no to that [another Sister Act] because so many of the nuns have died and it just wouldn’t feel right to me,” Goldberg said See what’s happening live (about NewNowNext). I’m pretty old for that now. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t, but it feels like there’s a new generation for sister act. And maybe now I can be a nun.”
How will Sister Act 3 build on the story of the first two?
As fans now know Goldberg is officially signed further for sister act 3Per meeting. Although little is known about the film, it is said to be a sequel to the first two films and not a remake as previously rumoured. That means Goldberg would once again play Deloris Van Cartier aka Sister Mary Clarence. Additionally, supporting cast members from the last two films – including Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena and Maggie Smith – could also reprise their roles.
One possible concept could be that Goldberg takes on more of a mentoring role for a new cast of characters. And if she does, it would reflect the actor’s involvement nicely Sister Act: The Musical, in which Goldberg played Mother Superior. Of course, being an actual nun in the new film is a significant leap for Deloris. But at least Deloris might go undercover as Mother Superior in any new situation she finds herself in.
