CRYSTAL PALACE chairman Steve Parish claims Uefa is allowing former members of the European Super League to revive their hated scheme through the back door.
A year after The ESL plot has failedHe says Euro football bosses are sucking up elite clubs – including the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ – by allowing them entry into the Champions League even if they don’t meet existing qualifying rules.
That Tournament will be revised in 2024 and asked if we’d learned anything since then, Parish said, “No, we went backwards. They (the Big Six) still get whatever they want.
“Last year there was a revolutionary spirit against them, but now no one is saying, ‘We’re going to share some commercial revenue’ or ‘We’re going to do anything differently.’
“I really feel like, for some bizarre reason, everyone feels intimidated by making any kind of positive change.
“UEFA is not effective. It’s about promising the broadcasters: ‘We’ll bring you all the top teams in the Champions League, hook or by crook, we’ll direct it so you can give us loads of money’ – and everyone else will know we do are also-rans.
“Most days you feel like someone is trying to change the rules to put us at a disadvantage.
“Maybe we’re all stupid, maybe we’re naive, maybe we get up every day and it’s a waste of time – we’ll never win anything, we should stay put.
“Well, I’m not going to do that, I just don’t see the point. I don’t think other clubs should be willing to do that either. We need to remember why we all love football – and that’s because teams like us can thrive.
“But this stuff that Uefa talks about, that if you win the FA Cup and you’re Tottenham you go to the Champions League but if you’re Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest you don’t. . . ”
Villa and Forest obviously won the European Cup.
Super Leaguers Spurs, arsenal and Manchester City never.
But the “coefficient” system is helping to feed the wealthy – petrified by well-run small-town clubs like Villarreal, last year’s Europa League winners this season’s Champions League semi-finalists.
Parish added: “These coefficients shouldn’t even exist.
“If we got to the Champions League our starting point (for TV money) would be £1m and Chelsea’s would be £30m because of the marketing coefficient – who came up with that? You really feel besieged.”
