The South Philadelphia bakery now ships the famous tomato pie nationwide

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Iannelli’s Bakery only has 15 days a year when you can get Vincent Iannelli’s famous tomato pie. The South Philadelphia Bakery was founded in 1910 by Iannelli’s grandparents. The cake was originally his grandmother’s recipe from Italy. “It’s a depression pizza from my grandmother’s time. They couldn’t afford the cheese, so they just made it.” Vincent started working in his grandparents’ bakery when he was nine. He started selling the bakery’s famous cakes just 15 days a year seven years ago when he wanted to explore new hobbies and business ventures but didn’t want to close his family’s business. “I enjoy being here, it’s fun, I make it funny, and when the customers come in it’s like, ‘Oh! Here’s a glass of wine. What do you do? I haven’t seen you in a minute.” To make it easier for customers who want a piece of this favorite Philadelphia cake, Vincent decided to start shipping his cakes nationally. “It’s basically creating more supply for demand, you don’t have to come up with the whole shipping aspect now. Well, send it to your doorstep.” He only makes 150-200 cakes a month and it’s first come, first served. The cakes come vacuum packed and customers can freeze them to eat later. To find out when to pick up a cake or have one delivered, keep an eye on their social media accounts to see when they’re available.
