The Rings of Power Episode 3 ending explained: Who is Adar?

In very dramatic and action-packed final moments, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 3 introduced us to a new villain.

Known only as Adar, viewers got a blurry glimpse of the suspected leader of the band of orcs that captured the elf Arondir and forced him to work in chains along with other prisoners. While escape looked likely as his swift fight against the orcs and their warg came to an end, Arondir narrowly missed and was literally brought back to earth. But who is Adar and what can we expect from the character as the series progresses?

Who is Adar and who plays him in The Rings of Power?

During the series’ first casting call, the character was described as “a villain who can also evoke a deep sense of pathos and wounded/fallen nobility,” along with “a degree of physicality” and projecting “a sense of timelessness.” , ” despite “seemingly” middle age. None of JRR Tolkien’s original works mention this name, so it appears that it is another original creation for The Rings of Power. On the other hand, he could be an amalgamation of other characters Tolkien had written, either in his published works or in his unpublished letters.

Joseph Mawle takes on the role of the orc leader, Adar. Fantasy fans may recognize the actor, having played Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones or maybe even his role in the Netflix series Sense8. Of course, the actor’s transformation could be so otherworldly that he’s completely unrecognizable. So far we’ve only gotten a glimpse of what to expect from his appearance: long hair, pale white skin, and a shiny gauntlet that exudes power.

If we tie what we now know to any of the trailers for the show, we can assume we got a shot of Adar standing calmly in front of a pack of orcs, as seen above. But the most interesting thing about it is the shape of the character’s ears. It’s clear that Adar is an elf, which opens up a wealth of questions. Why does he serve the side of evil when elves were just misguided at worst? What will he gain by leading an assault on the Southlands? Does he work directly for Sauron? Hopefully we’ll get some of those answers when The Rings of Power returns next week.
