VERA star Brenda Blethyn has finally revealed why the main character is never without her hat.
The 75-year-old actress, who has starred as DCI Vera Stanhope in the ITV series since 2011, has now revealed a touching detail that loyal fans didn’t notice.
Speaking on This Morning, she explained: ‘In the book, Vera has a skin condition which means she has a hard time walking in the sun, she has a bad reaction to the sun.
She added that the character’s frequent choice of a wide-brimmed hat is a “nod” to the condition contained in Ann Cleeve’s book.
Brenda added: “We’re not going to put that (details) on the phone, so the hat is a nod to that.”
In a separate interview, the actress confessed to finding the iconic prop on her own.
She added: “I bought it [the hat] in a fishing tackle shop in Newcastle. “
In fact, the series is based on many of Ann’s novels.
The opening book, titled The Crow’s Trap, opens the detective’s work in Northumberland.
The first book was followed by the second release of Telling Tales, while Hidden Deep is the third book in the literary series.
Many others followed, and were shown in the television adaptation.
AMOUNT OF VERA
Brenda recently confirmed the fate of the crime drama series after the episodes were delayed.
Last month, fans were shocked after the show was halted AGAIN after just two weeks of airing new episodes.
One viewer took to Twitter to ask the star when the show would be back on our screens – and luckily it won’t be for long.
Brenda simply replied: “Starting back in March.”
It was good news as Vera fans were saddened after it was revealed that the final two episodes of the season had been delayed.
The eleventh season premiered on August 29, 2021, soon followed by the second episode the following week.
But the return of the film was short-lived as it was delayed due to scenes still being filmed.
After Vera was delayed in September 2021, ITV confirmed it would resume in 2022, and although they kept their promise, filming was halted.
Episode three – titled “Tyger” – aired on January 9, 2021, and episode four – titled Crow Flies – premiered a week later.
Savvy fans discovered the show was delayed again after a quick look at the TV guide.
Vera’s usual 8pm – 10pm Sunday time slot has been replaced with both Good Karma Hospital at 8pm and Trigger Point at 9pm.
Angry fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment.
One person was “annoyed” with ITV about their scheduling options: “annoyed with itv for bringing the patio to the maternity hospital… I know which one I’d rather watch”
Another questioned what was going on: “@ITV what happened to Vera why put a 2 episode series and stop it to put another new series in”
Plenty asked the channel for some information regarding the reopening date: “Amazing to realize #Vera is back up, when will it be back @ITV?”
Sadly for fans, ITV hasn’t given any indication of when Vera will return to our screens in episodes five and six.
