BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Bishop Dontè Hickman leads the 4,000-member congregation at Southern Baptist Church, and they are still reeling from the death of one of them: 69-year-old Evelyn Player. She was stabbed to death in the bathroom on November 16 while volunteering at the church. The player’s family members have been part of the Southern Baptist for generations.
This week’s arrest has provided some comfort.
“Peace and I think some settlement for this unknown character who has been hiding and committing this kind of violence. Hickman told Investigator Mike Hellgren, WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren.
According to incriminating documents obtained by WJZ, DNA led them to the suspect, 62-year-old Manzie Smith, who had a history of assaulting women 40 years ago. They were able to match the DNA at the crime scene with Smith’s DNA already in the state database.
Smith’s records include a 1979 rape conviction where he received a 15-year sentence, and a 1992 rape and assault case where he received a 30-year sentence. For the 2014 assault and robbery of an elderly woman, Smith was sentenced to eight years in prison. He was then released on mandatory surveillance that expired in October — just weeks before the murders occurred.
“The justice system really didn’t do a good job of getting this person to be rehabilitated. There are many things that we have to consider as we do not want to prejudge those who have passed their time through the justice system, but we also want to provide adequate care and oversight so that actions can be taken. This virus occurs. don’t happen,” the victim’s pastor said.
He also told Hellgren that he had never seen the suspect at his church before.
According to the incriminating documents, Evelyn Player suffered multiple stab wounds, and also had multiple defensive wounds on her hands: She fought back. There is no indication that she knows the suspect.
Hellgren asked Hickman about forgiveness: “The human part of me says, ‘No. I cannot forgive. My pastoral, spiritual side, knowing what Christ forgave us all and died on the cross said, ‘Yes.’ Nothing is but the love and grace of God even if it is found through justice. “
