The final of ozark has divided audiences, with the episode earning the lowest viewer rating on IMDb in the series’ history.

Netflix’s hit crime thriller came to a close last week, releasing the final batch of episodes from its fourth and final season.

Major spoilers follow for the end of ozark

In the series finale, titled “A Hard Way to Go,” fan-favorite Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) met her end at the hands of Camila Elizondro (Veronica Falcón) in retaliation for killing Javi.

At the very end of the episode, Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg) breaks into the Byrde home and discovers the cookie jar containing Ben’s ashes – potentially giving him enough evidence to finally bring the crime family to justice.

However, he is then confronted by a shotgun-wielding Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), who is implied to shoot him dead just as the screen goes black.

The episode currently has a rating of just 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb, as voted on by the audience. That puts it well below the second worst-rated episode of all time, season one’s “Kaleidoscope” (rated 7.5 out of 10).

Many viewers shared their disappointment with the ending on social media.

“So… I absolutely hated the ending ozark…WTF,” wrote one fan.

“I hated that ozark Over,” wrote another. “HATED. You have made Ruth so unnecessarily dirty.”

“I loved Ozark until the last episode. Such a disappointing ending,” wrote another.

However, others defended the episode.

“#Ozark had a perfect ending and the negative reactions prove it,” one person wrote. “The Byrdes get their happy ending dressed all in black, and Ruth, dressed in white, must die for it. It’s not right, but for four seasons we watched Marty and Wendy win while everyone else lost.”

“The #Ozark ending was just perfect,” wrote another. “The show didn’t have a slam bang finale and instead had a slow burn, that was the very ethos it was built on. The theme lingered…that the world is an unfair place, no matter what you think about it.”

The entire series is now available to stream on Netflix.
