The new Freeform series Everything’s Trash marks a milestone in Phoebe Robinson’s career

NEW YORK – “Everything’s Trash” on Freeform comes from the brilliant mind of Phoebe Robinson, who first established herself as a podcaster when she was one of “Two Dope Queens.”

The star is also a standup comic and best-selling author. In fact, her new TV series is based on one of her books: Everything’s Trash, But It’s Okay.

The premise is that while life may be tough (especially now), we do our best, so let’s hope for the best.

Robinson warmly welcomes us to her world and we always want to return.

“We really just wanted to show what it’s like to be a black woman in your 30s in Brooklyn,” she said.

She described her character, a sentiment felt by many in the age group.

“Low money but lots of fun, making some funny dating mistakes, really trying to figure out her career,” Robinson said.

That’s kind of like the star herself making herself at home in her sitcom’s podcast studio set.

“It’s so much fun, it feels like home,” she said. “I love all these things. I love burping into the mic. I just like anything that makes someone laugh and lighten up, so it’s really cool.”

Visiting the set marks a milestone in the career of a determined woman who has worked for 14 years to get her own show.

She’s a star who is now welcome in some of the same offices where she used to work as a receptionist.

“I only really did standup for a living for nine years, so yeah, I was just a little hectic,” she said. “I’ve had all these side jobs or day jobs, and you really have to put in a lot of standing work to make it.”

And make her do it, following traditional advice: “Write what you know.”

For example, Robinson’s older brother on the show is just like her real-life older brother. She calls him a “Blerd”.

“A blerd is a black nerd, so like a Steve Urkel or sometimes like myself,” she said.

This is a fun, entertaining adult show.

It airs in freeform Wednesday night and begins streaming on Hulu the next day. Both are owned by Disney, the same parent company as this ABC network.
