The Nevers is one of the more curious productions from HBO in 2021. Set in Victorian England, the show is about a group of people – mostly women – endowed with superpowers, even though they are I don’t know how or why they got it. They are known as Touches. The series starts off pretty wild – it’s like a feminist Sherlock Holmes feeling when meeting the X-Men – and things get crazier from there.
But the program ran into problems. Like many other series, the series was affected by the pandemic and released only six of the 10 episodes as planned. Above all, showrunner Joss Whedon – the person behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Avengers – caught up in some big scandals and leave the program.
Then I wondered if HBO could let the show die in an euthanasia. But it didn’t. The studio has hired British screenwriter Philippa Goslett to replace Whedon as host and plans to release six more episodes next year. And now, Daily mail there are pictures of the cast in costumes, so this is really happening.
Tom Riley (Augustus Bidlow) is back on set The Nevers
Technically, all they have is actor Tom Riley returning to his pristine English and best suited as Augustus ‘Augie’ Bidlow, but that’s enough for me. Augie is a shy, Hugh Grant-ish gentleman and one of the few men to be Touched; he can swap minds with birds, which is a power that you’d think would have rather limited applications, but who knows?
Augie is also involved in a sort of love affair with Penance (Ann Skelly), the right-hand man of protagonist Amalia True (Laura Donnelly). And that was just the beginning of the concert; it runs pretty deep. I don’t know if The Nevers will probably be a huge hit for HBO, but I’ll be happy to see a lot of them when the series returns in 2022.
