The Jets’ brutal stretch to start the NFL schedule could decide the season

The Jets’ full schedule for 2022 was released Thursday night. Here are the highlights and what to expect from weeks 1-18 this season.

Three hardest games

Week 1 vs Ravens

The Jets haven’t won a season opener since 2018 and it feels like that won’t change this year. The Ravens are primed for a recovery season after an injury-ridden 2021. The new-look Jets’ defense is immediately put to the test by Lamar Jackson.

Week 7 at Broncos

Denver has traditionally been a difficult place for the Jets. They’ve been outplayed 49-0 in their last two trips there, including last year’s 26-0 debacle. Now the Broncos have Russell Wilson as quarterback. This could be painful for Jets fans.

Week 14 at Bills

Buffalo is entering the Super Bowl as a favorite this season and it will be a big test for the Jets. It’s never fun playing in Buffalo in December, and the Bills will likely fight for the playoffs. The Jets have spoken about playing meaningful games in December. You can start with that. The Jets have gone 0-12 against the AFC East for the past two seasons.

Three simplest games

Week 12 vs Bears

You have to dig deep into the schedule to find an “easy” game. The Bears are in full rebuild mode with a new coach and general manager, and quarterback Justin Fields has had a shaky rookie season.

Week 15 vs Lions

The Jets should be thankful for the bottom feeders in the NFC North. Detroit may have improved from last year, but they still don’t look very impressive.

Week 16 vs Jaguars

The Jets’ only prime-time appearance this season comes against Trevor Lawrence and the Jags. Urban Meyer is out and Doug Pederson is in. The Jets beat Jacksonville late last season. Can you repeat that a few days before Christmas?

Notable Games

Week 2 at Browns

The question here is simple: who is quarterback for the Browns? Deshaun Watson could get banned for it and that would change the complexion of this game dramatically. The Jets haven’t won a game in September since 2018. A Watson-less Browns could be their best bet.

Week 3 vs Bengals

One of the most shocking results of the 2021 season came when the Jets defeated the Bengals, who then went on to win the AFC. Cincinnati will be motivated for this one. New Jets CJ Uzomah and Carl Lawson will face off against their former team. Maybe Mike White should start with that.

Week 5 vs Dolphins

The Jets tried to close a trade for wide receiver Tyreek Hill in March, but he ended up in Miami instead. Now the Jets have to cover for him. That will be a fun story to watch in this one.

Where’s the bye?

The Jets bid farewell in week 10, which feels like a really good place. It’s a little over halfway. It should give the Jets a good chance to recover and regroup after a tough first-half schedule.

Total take away

The Jets have a brutal schedule for the start of the season. In the first nine weeks, they play five teams that made the playoffs last year, two other teams that were traded for marquee quarterbacks, and a Ravens team that should be ready to bounce back. The Jets are a better team on paper than last year, but this season could quickly move away from them. The Jets’ brutal stretch to start the NFL schedule could decide the season
