Javonta Crandall has been identified as a victim of Thursday’s shooting and his family say he has his whole life ahead of him.

“I’m just really hurt and emotional this morning. I lost my little boy,” his mother Kim Crandall said.

Crandall stood in tears as police gathered evidence from the scene of a day she says she will never forget.

“I got a call that he couldn’t make it. And he had just reenrolled in school at Nash Community College,” she said.

She told CBS17 that her son was just getting his life back on track. She said he’s looking forward to going back to school and looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day with his family.

“He came up to me the other night and said, ‘Ma, we’re going to church on Sunday,’ and I was just so proud to hear him say that,” she said, tears streaming down her cheeks.

According to the Rocky Mount Police Department The shooting from the car happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and May Drive.

The driver was shot in the hand and taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries.

The victim’s mother and older brother, Janva Crandall, said he left his car at a store and drove home with a friend.

They said that Gun violence in Rocky Mount is out of control. But they are forever grateful for the time he was in their lives.

“The last thing he said as he left the house this morning was I told him to be careful and I love him. He said ‘Mom, I love you too.’ So I’ll always remember those words,” his mother said.

“My brother had problems like everyone else. He is a child. He was only 20 years old,” said Janava Crandall.

We asked the family what they would say if they could speak to those responsible for the fatal shooting.

“I just want you to see what you’ve done to our family, bruh. They have taken a strong part of our family from us. Justice will always prevail. Even if you don’t get caught, you will have your day, you will have your time, you will have your place,” the victim’s brother said.
