The Democrats’ latest attempt to sell themselves ahead of the November election is turning around claim that the US economy is doing well, employing 6.5 million last year. It is doomed to fail for two important reasons.
First, everyone knows that these are still overwhelmingly just jobs recovered from the pandemic (with recovery being slowest in heavily lockdown, democratically controlled states).
Second, and more importantly, working Americans are all too aware of how rampant inflation is holding them back.
As a matter of fact, prices go higher for the working class than for wealthier Americans: Inflation for the year to March was 9.4 percent, according to the Labor Department’s CPI-W measure (Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Office Workers) vs. 8.5% in the “Headline” CPI figure.
It’s been even worse over the past six months, with an annualized CPI of 10.1% but a CPI-W of 11.1%.
These are the widest gaps ever recorded.
That’s because working-class Americans spend a larger chunk of their income on groceries and gasoline, which have seen by far the sharpest price increases.
In addition, both food and petrol were available Hit hard by Democrats war on carbon. Gas, of course, comes from the oil, which the Dems don’t want drilled, but oil and natural gas products are also key to making fertilizer; Finally, price increases show up in the grocery store.
bottom line: Real working class wages have fallen for most of Joe Biden’s presidency as inflation ate away at nominal pay increases.
And inflation began to rise again in early 2021 as Democrats rushed to push through Biden’s US bailout plan, which dropped $1.9 trillion in “stimulus” on an economy that was already recovering.
And voters see the truth every time they hit the grocery store or the gas pump. No amount of cheerful talk will convince them.
