The Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District wants to hire more bus drivers

CHAPEL HILL, NC (WNCN) — The Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district is one of many districts in central North Carolina that still have a shortage of bus drivers.

District spokesman Andy Jenks tells CBS 17 that they need to hire about 20 more drivers.

“You can recruit and hire new people, but then others leave for whatever reason; So there’s this cycle — or circle — of recruitment,” Jenks said.

The district is already thinking about the fall, and as COVID-19 cases drop and restrictions are lifted, officials are hoping for more applicants.

“As we get into August and September, conditions could be different and that could encourage some people who have been a little nervous about driving for various health and safety reasons over the past few months,” Jenks said.

The district is working on a budget proposal that Jenks said could include pay increases for school employees, including bus drivers. It would go to Orange County commissioners for a permitting process in the next few months.

The precinct leaders tell CBS 17 no matter what, every student gets a ride to school.

“Any student who needs transportation will be transported on the school bus,” Jenks said.
