TROUP COUNTY, Ga. (WRBL) – There was a significant incident in the case of a missing Auburn University student who disappeared 45 years ago from a LaGrange, Georgia bar. His car, with human remains and a wallet inside, was towed from a creek in Chambers County this week.
On January 27, 1976, 22-year-old Kyle Clinkscales left the Moose Club, a bar he worked for in his hometown of LaGrange, Georgia. Kyle planned to drive thirty-five miles to Auburn University in Alabama, a 12th grader. He never showed up.
This week, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Kyle’s white two-door 1974 Pinto Runabout 1974 with Georgia tag CEF-717 was located in a Chambers County creek off County 83rd Street.
Sheriff James Woodruff held a news conference Wednesday morning to release more information. Woodruff said at approximately 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, deputies from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office were notified of what appeared to be a car sunk in a creek off Road County 83, about 1 mile from County Route 388.
“When they arrived at the scene, they pulled the vehicle out of the water and it appeared to be an older model Ford touring car with the 1976 Georgia branding with the Troup County decal on it. Chambers County has contacted the Troup County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in attempting to run card information. The Troup County Card Office has been contacted and investigators in our crime division began examining any records we may have,” Sgt said. Stewart Smith.
After verifying the information, the card and VIN were found to match the 1974 Ford Pinto Runabout, the same car that Kyle was last seen driving on the night of January 27.NS.
The vehicle was taken to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, where it is currently being processed by Agents with GBI to determine the vehicle’s contents. At the time of this release, a wallet with identifying information and a skeleton was recovered.
Kyle’s father wrote a book about his disappearance, titled “Kyle’s Story: The Friday Never Came”. He also founded a nonprofit for missing people, “Find Me Inc.”
News 3 was informed that Kyle’s parents had passed away.
