The best mega evolutions in Pokemon Go

Mega Evolutions are some of the most powerful fighters in Pokemon Go, but they won’t come cheap, so you’ll want to make sure you focus your Mega Energy on the best ones.

First introduced in Pokemon X & Y, the Mega Evolution mechanic gave existing species a far more powerful form. They’ve been dropped in recent mainline games, but Mega Evolutions still exist in Pokemon Go – as long as you have enough Mega Energy.

Mega Evolutions are a temporary state, and you need to win Mega Raids to earn enough Mega Energy to get there. This is a time-consuming (and sometimes costly) process, so you’ll want to make sure you only focus on the best Mega Evolved Pokémon.

We’ve ranked the best below Mega Evolutions currently available in Pokemon Go, from Mega Gengar to Mega Blastoise, and explained why they are the Pokemon you want on your team.

5. Mega Gyarados

Mega Gyarados in Pokemon Go

  • Costs: 200 Mega Energy (40 Mega Energy after first use)
  • Fast movement: waterfall or bite
  • Charged Movement: hydropump or crunch

Mega Gyarados is a great all-rounder in Pokemon Go, and it has the stats to back up its ferocious looks: a staggering 5,332 CP max means it has the highest potential CP in the game, and its 292 attack stats mixed in with decent defense and Stamina makes it a force to be reckoned with.

Mega Gyarados can appear as either a Water-type Mega or a Dark-type Mega thanks to the new typing it gains upon Mega Evolution. If you want to decide on the water type, waterfall and hydro pump are superior draw options. If you prefer the Dark type, go for Bite and Crunch for optimal DPS.

4. Mega Blastoise

Mega Blastoise in Pokemon Go

  • Costs: 200 Mega Energy (40 Mega Energy after first use)
  • Fast movement: water gun
  • Charged Movement: Hydro cannon or hydro pump

Blastoise has been a fan favorite since the early Pokemon days, and its Mega Evolution makes it powerful enough to finally earn a spot on your team. Water Pistol and Hydro Cannon make it one of the best Water-types you can get, and lots of bulk means it lasts a long time.

Mega Blastoise gets bonus points for the boost it gives other Water-types, especially when many legendary raid bosses are Ground, Rock, or Fire-type. However, always keep in mind Mega Blastoise’s clear weaknesses to Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon.

3. Mega Venusaur

Mega Venusaur in Pokemon Go

  • Costs: 200 Mega Energy (40 Mega Energy after first use)
  • Fast movement: wine whip
  • Charged Movement: Frenzy Plant or Sunbeam

Mega Venusaur was one of the OG Mega Evolutions in Go and remains just as desirable as it was then. It has a large mass, so it should last a long time in combat, and a respectable 241 Attack stat means it can also deal big damage.

When it comes to attacks, you’ll want a plant build of Vine Whip as a fast move and Frenzy Plant as a charged move thanks to her incredible damage output. However, Frenzy Plant is an elite move. So if you don’t have access to it, Solar Beam is a solid backup option.

2. Mega Charizard Y

Mega Charizard Y

  • Costs: 200 Mega Energy (40 Mega Energy after first use)
  • Fast movement: fire spin
  • Charged Movement: Blast Burn or Dragon Claw

Mega Charizard Y is one of the few Pokemon that can go above 5,000 CP in Go, and that makes it a massive threat. That’s not all, though, as it also has a ridiculously high Attack stat of 319, which more than makes up for its relatively low Stamina and Defense (when it comes to Mega Evolutions).

Mega Charizard Y is on the pricey side, with a huge barrier to entry of 200 Mega Energy and 40 Mega Energy needed every time after that, but it’s well worth the investment as it’s one of the top Fire-types in the game, especially with Fire Spin and Blast Fire in his moveset.

1. Mega Gengar

Mega Gengar

  • Costs: 200 Mega Energy (40 Mega Energy after first use)
  • Fast movement: Lick
  • Charged Movement: Shadow Ball or Mud Bomb

Mega Gengar is the best Ghost type in Pokemon Go and arguably the best Mega Evolution point. The beloved Kanto creature was already a beast in PvE, but the ability to Mega Evolve has taken it to a new level, with a max CP of just under 5000 and an absolutely ferocious Attack stat of 349.

Mega Gengar has access to some incredible moves like Shadow Ball and will be a powerful asset in almost any scenario – even when Ghost-types aren’t particularly effective. Its only downside is its weakness to Ghost and Psychic attacks, but it’s a small price to pay for excellence.

So there you have it: the top five Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Go to spend your time and resources on. Of course, each Mega Evolution is a powerful perk, but these climb to the top.

With the announcement that Mega Absol will be making its debut in October 2021, it will be interesting to see how it fits into Mega Evolutions’ current stack. We’ll be sure to update this list if it’s a champion.
