The Army is cutting the salaries of over 60,000 unvaccinated National Guardsmen, Reserves

The U.S. Army said Friday that about 40,000 National Guardsmen and 22,000 reservists who have refused to be vaccinated against the coronavirus will be suspended from their duties, effectively cutting their salaries and benefits.

“Soldiers who refuse the vaccination order without an approved or pending exemption request will face adverse administrative action, including flags, bans from service and official reprimands,” an army spokesman said in a statement to

The announcement comes a week after the Army National Guard’s deadline for soldiers to receive the shots in their arms.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in November that members of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard who refuse to be vaccinated would be barred from training and their pay blocked.

Austin also warned that continued refusal to get vaccinated could result in a “disconnection” or expulsion from the service.

The move reportedly comes as soldiers prepare for annual summer training, which will help them hone their military skills and ensure they’re ready should they need to be deployed.

Fox News could not immediately reach the army for comment.

Although soldiers who remain in doubt about the vaccine’s merits will feel the effects of disobeying an order, army officials said they will continue to work with soldiers to keep them on duty — whether by educating them on the vaccine’s benefits inform, or on rare occasions, to ensure they qualify for exemption status.

“We will give every soldier every opportunity to get vaccinated and continue their military career,” Army Guard director Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen said in a statement to “We don’t give up on anyone until the separation paperwork is signed and completed.”

About 13 percent of the Army National Guard and 12 percent of Army Reserves remain unvaccinated — a margin that could prove crippling for the ranks as the service struggles with low recruitment. The Army is cutting the salaries of over 60,000 unvaccinated National Guardsmen, Reserves
