A TIKTOK tech expert gave an interesting lesson about the curious black dot on the backs of newer iPhone models.
In a recent video, user @phonerepairguru explained what the little circle located near the rear camera lens actually does.
“It’s not there to show off,” the influencer told his 4.2 million TikTok followers. “It’s called the Lidar sensor.”
Lidar (Light Distance Detection and Measurement) is a remote sensing method that uses a pulsed laser to measure distances.
It is used by satellite mapping to examine the Earth’s surface and self-driving cars to monitor their surroundings on the road.
Apple added a Lidar sensor to the 2020 iPad Pro and launched its first iPhones with the technology later that year.
It’s available now on iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
It’s used for some handy features that use augmented reality (AR), such as Apple’s Measure app, which turns your device into a tape measure.
Other AR apps let you turn your surroundings into an interactive game or try on a piece of furniture before you buy it by virtually “placing” the object in the room.
To demonstrate the capabilities of this technology, @phonerepairguru showed it in action through a third-party “3DScannerApp”.
After recording his desk through a sensor, TikToker showed how the app can create a 3D map of the desk.
You can use the app to show someone three-dimensional space with your iPhone, or even to take scans that you can process with a 3D printer.
Going forward, Apple seems to have plans to put its Lidar technology in a “mixed reality headset” rumored to launch next year.
Apple is said to have been working on virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality for years.
Competitors like Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Facebook have all released products in this area.
But Apple has played close to itself, bringing only AR and VR features to the iPhone.
However, the company applied many patents for mixed reality headset technology, indicating that something specific is being done.
In other news, Apple announced that it will allow customers fix their own iPhone for the first time starting next year.
