Texas woman charged with murder over ‘self-induced’ abortion

A Texas woman was arrested Thursday for allegedly performing an “illegal” abortion on herself, authorities said.

Lizelle Herrera, 26, was taken into custody in the southern part of the state near the border with Mexico and is currently being held in a Starr County jail on $500,000 bail.

Herrea “willfully and knowingly caused the death of a person from a self-induced abortion,” a spokesman for the Starr County Sheriff’s Office told KVEO TV on Friday.

The arrest has sparked protests in Texas, where abortion activists planned to gather Saturday outside the jail where Herrera is being held.

That frontera fund, which funds abortions in Texas, called on its supporters to protest the jailing, which comes seven months after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott passed an anti-abortion bill in September that would ban abortions after six weeks.

A study released last month by the University of Texas at Austin found that 5,600 Texans traveled to out-of-state abortion clinics to have abortions between September and December 2021, compared with 500 for the same period in 2019.
