Texas Grid: ERCOT says power ready for winter weather after freezing test

ERCOT and PUC are the two agencies in charge of the Texas grid.
On Thursday, ERCOT announced that it had completed on-site inspections of the mandatory wintering efforts, adding that the results showed that the independently owned generating fleet and transmission companies serving the region had Get ready for winter weather.
ERCOT has completed inspections of more than 300 generating units and 22 transmission facilities to ensure that they comply with the new, rigorous winter preparation requirements of the Public Utilities Commission and the Planning Authority. Texas law: https://t.co/5dW6DCVcvG @PUCTX #txlege.

While ERCOT does not own or operate any generating units or power lines, ERCOT is responsible for balancing electricity supply and demand.
ERCOT said it has completed inspections at more than 300 generating units, accounting for 85% of the megawatt hours lost during the winter storm due to power outages and 22 transmission substation facilities.
The group found that:
- Of the 302 generators tested, some generators exceeded PUC coagulation requirements.
- The 10 generation resources tested had items identified on the day of the test that needed repair. In a statement, ERCOT provided an example saying that on the day of the test, a production unit may need a windshield to comply. It claims that those issues have been fixed and all 10 units are still working.
- Of the 22 transmission station facilities examined, ERCOT found that six had identified potential defects. It claims most of that has been fixed. ERCOT goes on to describe defects as “generally small items, such as a cabinet heater not working or a lack of weathering on the cabinet door on the day of inspection.” ERCOT says most items have been repaired.
ERCOT, a membership-based nonprofit, has submitted a preliminary summary inspection report to the PUC. Next, it will submit its final inspection report on January 18, 2022.
The maximum penalties for breaking weather rules increased to $1,000,000 per day per violation earlier this year.
December 1 is the deadline for generators and transmission companies to tell the state what they have done to streamline their operations.
