Texas baseball tackle: Weatherford’s Owen Woodward tackles Josh Phillips during a college game

WEATHERFORD, Texas (KTRK) — Tackles are common in football, but you wouldn’t be able to say that given what happened Wednesday at the Weatherford, Texas baseball field after a pitcher tackled and knocked out a batsman at a college -Game.

As of Thursday morning, the video of Weatherford College pitcher Owen Woodward, a sophomore, sprinting at North Central Texas College’s Josh Phillips and throwing him to the ground has been viewed at least 3.6 million times on Twitter.

The viral moment shocked the announcers as you can hear the tone of one of them change from a normal play call to a shock.

“North Central took the lead here in game one. Oh! Oh my God. Oh no. Oh no,” he said as the attack unfolded. “It was out of nowhere. Woodward just attacked Phillips right there.”

Weatherford, west of Fort Worth, hosted the NCTC on Wednesday.

In the top of the sixth inning, Phillips, a Cypress-area freshman, hit a go-ahead home run.

As he rounded bases and celebrated with his third base coach, Woodward threw down his glove and charged and punched him, knocking off Phillip’s helmet.

Phillips got back up and still made it to home plate, and the umpires stopped play.

After the hit, Phillips’ teammates ran to third base, with some piling up on Woodward.

But Woodward’s goal could prove costly.

Weatherford College released a statement saying Woodward faces possible disciplinary action, up to and possibly including deportation.

The Weatherford College Police Department is also investigating with both schools.

Jeff Lightfoot, Weatherford’s head baseball coach and assistant athletic director, said he was “shocked and disappointed” by what happened.

“We are completely embarrassed by this incident and apologize to North Central Texas College and the fans of toilet baseball. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated,” Lightfoot said in part.

The coach added that Woodward had never been involved in such incidents before.

The NCTC’s Chancellor, Dr. Brent Wallace, also commented, adding, “The NCTC expects our student-athletes to demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship both on and off the field. The unfortunate events at Weatherford College will be used as a teaching moment for our student-athletes to help ensure these incidents do not happen again in the future.”

Beginning Thursday, the teams will face each other again on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in 7-inning and 9-inning games, respectively.

It is currently unclear what caused Woodward’s reaction.
