(Reuters) – The group stage of the 2022 Davis Cup finals will be played in Bologna, Glasgow, Hamburg and Malaga in September, the International Tennis Federation said on Thursday.

The 2022 final will feature 16 nations in groups based in each of the four cities. They consist of 12 winning teams from the qualifiers plus Croatia, who are automatically qualified as last year’s finalists, and wildcards from Serbia and Great Britain.

The Russians will not be able to defend their title after the ruling International Tennis Federation (ITF) suspended memberships of Russia and Belarus and withdrew their entries from team competitions following the invasion of Ukraine.

The ITF announced that the reserve wildcard spot was awarded to Canada, who lost 4-0 to the Netherlands in the qualifiers.

The draw for the group stage, to be played from September 14-18, is scheduled to take place in London on March 31.

The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages, which will serve as the season-closing event on the men’s tennis calendar in a fifth host city from November 23-27.

“We are very proud of how far the Davis Cup has come in its rich history,” said ITF President David Haggerty.

“We are committed to the future success of the event while maintaining the traditional elements of the Men’s World Cup in tennis.

“This includes the unique atmosphere and presentation of the event in different cities around the world throughout the year to bring the Davis Cup to a larger audience.”

The competition, which began in 1900, has undergone various format changes, most recently in 2019 when home and away matches were replaced by a World Cup-style finals in Madrid.
