The countdown to midnight continues.
Fresh from being named Songwriter-Artist of the Decade at Tuesday night’s Nashville Songwriter Awards, Taylor Swift unveiled the first song title of her highly-anticipated 10th studio album — due out Oct. 21 — in a TikTok video, of course, at midnight sharp.
After previously only revealing that there are 13 tracks on “Midnights,” the 11-time Grammy winner debuted “Midnights Mayhem With Me,” capturing the song titles with a lottery-style cage of balls starting with 1 through 13 are marked to publish.
“I know I have a habit of dropping cryptic clues and Easter eggs when I’m giving you information about new music, and I’m not here to deny that — I’m here to defy it,” she says in tik tok. “Welcome to a series I call Midnights Mayhem With Me. I will use this technologically advanced device to let fate decide exactly which titles I will announce and in what order.”
The 32-year-old entertainer then pulls the first ball out of the cage, for lane 13 – which any good Swiftie knows is Tay Tay’s lucky number.
“The first track I’m going to tell you about is obviously track 13,” says Swift, who then picks up a red phone and reveals that “Track 13 is called ‘Mastermind.’ ”
And that title take is all eager fans are getting for now, and they’ll have to calm down and wait for what’s likely to be 12 more videos – which will surely be released at witching hour – before they get the full track listing for “Midnight.”
But Swift didn’t play it so coy as she accepted her award for Songwriter Artist of the Decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards, held Tuesday night at Music City’s Ryman Auditorium.
“Writing songs is a calling, and to be able to call it your career makes you very happy,” said Swift, who, of course, got her start in Nashville as a country artist. “You have to be thankful for that every day – and [for] all the people who thought your words might be worth hearing, this town is the school that taught me that.”
Swift – who got her own songwriting page on Spotify earlier this week – then sang the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” which earned her a record-breaking trophy for third video of the year at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards . And during her acceptance speech, the superstar first announced the upcoming release of “Midnights.”
