Streaming service or scam? What to look for before signing up

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Between Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and others, there seem to be countless streaming services these days.

“I have about four,” says Samara Tumea in downtown Fort Myers.

“Second, I use it now. And then I use some from my parents,” said Emma Froehlich. “Have a lot of. I think there are too many. ”

The rise in popularity of streaming services has now made them a target for scammers.

“The use of these becomes more efficient,” said Ray Leventhal, a technology specialist with CPR Tools in Fort Myers. “If you’re the bad guy, you want to go to the place with the most traffic.”

The Better business room recently issued a warning: Scammers are creating look-alike websites or sending fake registration emails to try to steal people’s credit card numbers or login information.

“It’s an entryway,” Leventhal explained. “Most people don’t do what we should, which is never password reuse. So, if I know your Netflix email address and password, I can most likely find your account on other websites using the same login.”

Leventhal says you should double-check the site’s URL in the address bar to make sure it’s the real site. You should also verify the email addresses of incoming messages and hover over links to see where you’re going before clicking them.

“I think the reason people fall victim (of this) is because we are all part of what I call the ‘instant gratification society.’ We want it now, we want it fast,” Leventhal explained. “Assume someone wants what you have. And if you are in doubt, do something else.”
