Streamers attack Twitch for not recognizing Arab Heritage Month

Twitch streamers have started attacking the platform over the lack of recognition of Arabic Heritage Month and Ramadan.

The beginning of April marked the beginning of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community celebrated by Muslims around the world, as well as the month of Arab heritage.

Although Twitch hosts several different cultural months and integrative initiatives such as Black History and LGBTQIA+the Amazon-owned platform has yet to acknowledge Arabic heritage and Ramadan.

Twitch Middle East

Twitch has landed in hot water over the lack of recognition.

in a (n Tweet from April 2ndpopular Arabic Twitch streamer “Frogan”, suggested Twitch for lack of recognition and support for Ramadan and Arabic history.

“I am very disappointed that Twitch is not recognizing Ramadan or Arabic streamers for Arab Heritage Month as I know MENA streamers have so much impact on the platform,” Frogan wrote.

She continued, adding that the live-streaming platform doesn’t even have the MENA category in its demographic surveys: “Even though Twitch
wanted to do something for Arab Heritage Month, their demographic survey (which they use to find creators for these events) doesn’t have a Middle East/North Africa category.

Have to admit I thought the same thing. I’ve tried to talk more about Ramadan in my streams in an accessible and understandable way,” replied GameSpot editor Tamoor Hussain.

He continued, “It would be nice to see Twitch recognizing and elevating the voices of the Muslim community at large. Or even Arab/South Asian streamers.”

Recently, a large number of Middle Eastern Twitch streamers were blocked from receiving their payouts from the platform due to “a discrepancy with certain tax information provided during the onboarding process.”

It remains to be seen whether Twitch plans to recognize either Arabic Heritage Month or Ramadan following the backlash.
