Stranger Things 4 creators Ross and Matt Duffer call the grandfather clock a “core part of the mystery”

Fans have speculated about the possibility of time travel stranger things 4 since the end of the third season. Marketing for the upcoming season only added to the rumors as some of the teaser trailers released focused on clock images in the scenes. While we don’t think the idea stranger things 4 including time travel is a slam dunk theory, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, recently addressed the presence of the grandfather clock we saw so prominently in the full-length trailer.

All clocks previously seen in the marketing of Stranger Things 4

From teaser trailers to posters, the imagery for stranger things 4 contains several pictures of clocks. In one of the first images released for the upcoming season, fans saw a watch face hidden inside the watch stranger things Logo wrapped with the telltale vines of Upside Down. Another teaser, released on May 6, 2021, showed Hawkins National Laboratory with a clock on the wall with its hands set at three and 12. The most striking clock, however, is a grandfather clock in the Creel House.

In which The Creel House teaser was released on September 25, 2021, some of the children at Hawkins were investigating the abandoned Creel House. As they walk up the stairs, the camera zooms in on the face of an old grandfather clock that was left in the house. We saw the same grandfather clock on the poster labeled 003 released on February 17, 2022, and showrunners used it again for the live stream counting down to the trailer.

The Duffer Brothers called the grandfather clock a “key part of the mystery”

The Duffer Brothers addressed fans’ suspicions about the watch as they sat down IGN disassemble that stranger things 4 Full length pendant. However, the couple has not yet confirmed any time travel on the series.

“It’s a really central part of the puzzle that our Hawkins group is trying to solve,” Ross explained. “So I don’t want to give too much away, other than to say that this watch has a very, very important role to play in the future.”

Matt added: “And you don’t want to see the clock! If you see the clock, it’s not great. Unfortunately, Max saw the watch, and when we see her floating later in the trailer, that doesn’t seem like a good thing.”

Stranger Things 4 has heavy haunted house vibes

Marketing and a handful of interviews with the cast hinted a horror-heavy plot for stranger things 4. Ross and Matt Duffer spoke about their love for scary movies and why they felt a horror movie made sense for the young cast this season.

Speaking to IGN, Matt said, “We’ve wanted to do the haunted house thing for a while I think. Every year we try to do something different. This was a more horror-leaning season. We had our kids, they’re obviously in high school, and it just felt very natural that they should be in a horror movie.”

With the reveal of this season’s big villain, Vecna, to Robert Englund’s character Victor Creel, who has no eyeballs, it’s pretty clear stranger things 4 definitely ups the ante when it comes to chills.

TIED TOGETHER: Stranger Things 4 will finally “give audiences some answers,” according to Ross Duffer.
