Stewartville may stay in the dark until Friday


Oronoco, MN (KROC AM News) – Oronoco-based People’s Energy Cooperative is still experiencing widespread power outages across its southeastern Minnesota service territory due to Wednesday’s storm.
Stewartville was especially hard hit and the cooperative said that because of the heavy and serious damage, customers in Ho Chi Minh City. “So expect no power until at least mid-morrow, possibly longer.”
The people said crews are currently working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Crews from nearby utilities will also assist in restoring power.
“The safety of our members and staff is of paramount importance. We are currently taking all possible measures to restore power and ensure the safety of our members, while considering the safety of our online employees who are have to work under these adverse conditions,“President and CEO, Mike Henke said.

Co-op members experiencing a power outage should take the following actions to stay safe and comfortable:
● Stay indoors and wear warm clothes.
● Close unnecessary rooms.
● When using an alternative heat source, follow the operating instructions, use fire protection measures, and ensure proper ventilation. Always keep a multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it properly.
● Place a rolled up rug or thick towel under the door to minimize cold drafts.
● Cover windows at night.
● Keep a close eye on the temperature in your home. Babies and people over 65 are more susceptible to colds. Stay with friends, loved ones, or go to a shelter if you can’t keep your home warm.
Members should report any outages through SmartHub, texting a bug (if you’re registered), or by calling (800) 214-2694. Broken power poles and downed power lines should also be reported by calling the Cooperative directly.
Rochester Public Utilities employees are also busy restoring service after hundreds of people lost power in the wake of the storm. And RPU sent this notice to affected customers:
