LONDON (Reuters) – Fans in the UK will need to show proof of having had a double vaccination against COVID-19 or testing negative to attend peak sports after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed restrictions stricter restrictions on COVID-19 in the country on Wednesday.
The UK government has made the NHS COVID Pass mandatory for any event with more than 10,000 participants in an attempt to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.
A COVID card will also be needed for any uncovered indoor venue with more than 500 people and any outdoor venue with more than 4,000 people.
The rules, announced as part of “plan B” COVID measures in the UK, will come into force from December 15.
Johnson said the card will still be available to people who have had two doses of the vaccine but the UK government will keep this under review as the booster program is expanded.
The UK has recorded more than 145,000 deaths from COVID-19 during the pandemic.
The rapid start to the vaccine program has helped limit the impact, and in recent months, cases have stabilized at around 43,000 daily infections and 135 deaths after Johnson lifted the virus. remove most restrictions in the UK.
