Spiderman: There is no way home now out – and under review.
On Monday (December 13), the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) the film had its Hollywood premiere, with spoiler-free reactions that went viral on social media shortly after.
There has been a particular sense of excitement around this release due to the secretive nature of its production.
After it was revealed that a number of non-MCU characters from previous Spider-Man films would be joining the film (including Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro), many assumed that former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will appear in some form.
For the most part, critics were pleased with the outcome of the film, which saw Tom Holland return as web host alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.
The Independent – three Stars
“Holland’s best moments as Spider-Man have always been tapping into that ingrained desperation to be seen and loved – and many of those moments are found here. But getting him in trouble here with the ghosts of the previous series also puts him and the series at a constant disadvantage. There is no way home didn’t know what to do with the lesser-remembered Amazing Spider-Man villains. It also achieves, and fails to achieve, Raimi .’s baroque tragedy Spider-Man 2 and its thrillingly executed action parts. ”
Empire Magazine – five stars
“The movie is much more than wittily done fan service. While it piles high on villainy and danger, it doesn’t miss the heart of the series: Tom Hollandof Peter, and his unrelenting struggle to do the right thing by his friends and family… This is not just a light-hearted rumor. There is no way home has a big emotional hit to deliver”
Time – four stars
“As satisfying to watch as it risks discussion (it’s a deceiving minefield), Marvel’s latest big-screen superhero web adventure is an explosion of postmodernism. Modernity never abandons its emotional core.”
Guardians – three Stars
“Jon Watts has done a pretty solid job here, tasked with greatly upping the premise while bringing back a lot of the bad stuff from previous Spider-Man universes, delivering a gripping adventure, skillfully choreographed will appease a large number of fans this Christmas.”
Rolling Stone – mixed reviews
“There is a button for you being pressed. Fan service is being done here, as it is with most modern superhero movies, but it has now spanned generations of fans. Why is there a Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film asks frivolously, when you can have several? ”
