Sophie Turner said she “developed a coping mechanism” so she wouldn’t get “traumatized” while filming game of Thrones.
The 26-year-old actress reflects on how she filmed the show’s most disturbing scenes when she was very young, in a new interview with Jessica Chastain The cut Magazine that came out on May 10th.
Turner was 15 when she landed the role of Sansa Stark on the HBO show based on George RR Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Firewhich became a sensational success after its release in 2011.
One of the show’s most controversial, disturbing, and controversial scenes involved Turner’s character. In season six, Sansa marries Ramsay Bolton (played by Iwan Rheon), who rapes her on their wedding night while forcing Theon Greyjoy to watch. Theon (Alfie Allen) grew up with the Stark siblings and was like a brother to Sansa.
Turner, who was 19 when the episode aired, told Chastain that she “developed a coping mechanism to just have the most fun between takes” while filming the dark fantasy drama so she wouldn’t ” traumatized”.
She responded to the Oscar winner’s question about “walking into a character and then letting go of it” to return to her normal life during filming.
“Do you have a ritual?” that Tammy Faye’s eyes the actor wondered.
“I don’t, but I find it pretty easy to get in and out of [of character]’ Turner revealed, adding, ‘You saw it X-Men, in between takes, singing and dancing together. It helps to have people who are also willing to get out of it.”
Chastain appeared in the 2019 Marvel film alongside Turner’s Jean Gray as Vuk X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Turner continued, “And it’s just something that growing up on a show is game of Thronesthe subject was so difficult that I just developed a coping mechanism where I just have the most fun between takes so I don’t get traumatized.”
When Chastain asked if some of the show’s more graphic and violent themes left Turner with any lingering trauma, she replied, “I’m sure I’ll show some symptoms of trauma later on. I don’t think I could understand much of the scene at that age.”

Turner, the May-June cover star ofThe cutis among the stars of HBO’s new true crime miniseries The stairsalong with Colin Firth and Toni Collette.
She is also expecting her second child with husband Joe Jonas after giving birth to their daughter Willa in 2020.
