The son of a woman allegedly killed in 2015 by an Alabama inmate who disappeared with a correctional officer said he feared for his safety and that of the public as the “dangerous” prisoner remains at large.
Austin Williams – whose mother, Connie Ridgeway, 58, was stabbed – said he was “shocked” to be told suspect Casey Cole White, 38, along with Vicki White, 56, the assistant director of Lauderdale Correctional Services County, gone
“It’s really hard to describe how I feel,” the Tennessee resident told the US Sun. “It’s hard to believe that something like this is even possible. It blows my mind completely.”
He said he fears for his own safety and that of the public while Casey White remains at large.
“Oh, he’s a very dangerous person and anyone who comes into contact with her needs to call 911 right away,” Austin told the outlet.
Casey White was accused of breaking into Ridgeway’s home and stabbing her to death.
Although he reportedly confessed to the murder, he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
“He’s so dangerous,” Williams said, adding, “This is a very dangerous guy and that means anyone who crosses his path is in great danger.”
“I doubtless fear for their safety. He’s a very violent person and there’s no limit to what he could do,” Austin said.
“You think you’ve got the guy and he finally gets brought to justice and then all of a sudden he comes out and someone who’s supposed to be keeping him inside actually helps him out,” he continued.
The grieving son, who urged the couple to turn themselves in, added: “It blows my mind that anyone familiar with Casey White and his record would risk anything with him because he’s just such a dangerous person .”
Casey disappeared with Vicki after she said she was taking him to county court for a mental health inquest on Friday. An arrest warrant was issued for her on Monday.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said it appears the prison officials acted of their own free will.
“I think we’re trying to hold on to this last glimmer of hope that maybe for some reason she was threatened and did it under duress … but you would feel absolutely betrayed,” Singleton told CNN.
“All of her colleagues are devastated. We’ve never had a situation like this at Vicki White. She was a model employee,” added the sheriff.
He said surveillance footage of their squad car found found no evidence of what happened to the two.
“We’re still aggressively pursuing any lead we get,” Singleton told the network. “The biggest obstacle we have right now is that we still don’t have a vehicle description for the vehicle they may have switched to.”
He said Vicki, a widow with no children, also filed her pension papers last week – with Friday set to be her last day of work.
She recently sold her house but her paperwork for her retirement savings hasn’t been processed, Singleton told CNN.
He added that there is no clear evidence that the two people had a personal relationship.
As deputy director of correctional facilities, “Vicki has been around the cell blocks frequently and has contact with all the inmates at one time or another,” he told CNN.
“But as far as a romantic relationship or anything like that, we don’t have any evidence or proof of that, although it’s a possibility,” he said.
Vicki’s mother, Pat Davis, told WAAY that she was in shock.
“As a mother, I didn’t know how to act because at first I thought it was a mistake,” Davis told the CNN affiliate. “And then when I found out it was, it was just disbelief.”
She told the outlet that her daughter, who went to live with her after her apartment was sold, didn’t mention retirement and never spoke about Casey White.
“I didn’t know anything about him,” she said. “We don’t know if she was abducted by force or if she was there voluntarily. But we just want her back. That’s all we want.”
In 2020, Casey attempted to break out of the same lockdown, the US Sun reported. He reportedly made two makeshift knives and planned to take a hostage as part of his escape plan, but this was foiled by correctional officers.
The trial led to a new policy requiring two MPs to accompany the main murder suspect anywhere, including in court.
The US Marshals Service has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information in the case.
“You should not attempt to approach any of these individuals as we consider them both dangerous and in all likelihood both individuals are armed,” US Marshal Marty Keely said Monday.
