LONDON (Reuters) – British hospitals, especially in London, are struggling to maintain staff levels due to the number of people quarantined with COVID-19, a senior emergency doctor said on Monday. Five.

With a new highly transmissible Omicron variant of the virus on the rise, Britain on Wednesday recorded its highest daily number of coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic, with 78,610 cases of COVID-19 reported.

Katherine Henderson, an emergency consultant in London and President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, told BBC Radio: “The real acute issue is staff-related.

“Even if we haven’t seen a huge increase in hospital admissions, we’ve seen the effects of not having a shift operator in a reasonable and safe manner. So we worry about the impending patient risk because we don’t have the staff.”

Henderson said London was particularly hard hit.

“We’re looking at maybe 10 percent of the staff, ie doctors and nurses, who are out of work.”
